Foreword

The Delmarva Discovery Center on the Pocomoke River entered the planning process to create a document/plan to guide its construction and growth process. The board and volunteers are motivated by its vision of a vibrant discovery center that generates excitement in learning. To this end efforts are ongoing, guided by this strategic and financial plan.

The Delmarva Discovery Center on the Pocomoke River will serve as a source of learning and discovery for the public through the preservation and interpretation of its cultural and natural heritage.

Organizational Profile

The Delmarva Discovery Center on the Pocomoke River will be a living museum, a space for learning and discovery for visitors of all ages. Located on the Pocomoke River in downtown Pocomoke City, the Discovery Center will focus on river ecology, the history of the Pocomoke River, including shipbuilding, trading, fishing, and local Native American historical culture.

The Delmarva Discovery Center on the Pocomoke River presently consists of two buildings, the Discovery Center and the Exploratory. The Discovery Center is a 16,000 square foot, 1920s era building and will house the exhibits, changing exhibit space, gift shop, classroom, and

administrative space. The Exploratory, an adjacent converted gas station, is the educational center and is equipped to support environmental research activities for students. A restaurant will be built adjacent to the Discovery Building, next to the river. This waterfront space will be leased, and will assist in long-term financial support for the Discovery Center.

The Discovery Center will offer a regular schedule of programs, tours, and presentations to families, school classes, youth groups, and other visitors. Special programs may include summer camp, outreach programs, volunteer programs, and other science and cultural programs. The facility will be available for community and special events. Membership to the museum will be open to the public. As part of its mission, the Discovery Center will collaborate with local schools, civic organizations, and area museums.
